Tip Pool Calculator — Fair Tip Distribution

Pooling and redistributing tips is common in restaurants, bars, cafes, and hotels — a points-based system ensures each role gets a fair share proportional to their contribution.

Enter the total tips collected and assign points to each staff member or role. The calculator distributes the pool proportionally so every dollar is accounted for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this calculator.

How does a points-based tip pool work?

Each staff member or role is assigned a points value reflecting their contribution. Total tips are divided by total points to get a per-point value, then each person receives (their points × per-point value). For example, $1,200 split among 4 points (server 2, busser 1, host 1) gives $300 per point.

Is tip pooling legal?

Yes, under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), employers may require tip pooling among customarily tipped employees (servers, bartenders, bussers). Since 2021, back-of-house staff may also be included if no tip credit is taken. Always check your state laws for additional rules.

Can I use this for daily, weekly, or event tip pools?

Yes — just enter the total tips for whatever period you are distributing and the staff present for that period. The math works the same whether it is a single shift or a full week's pool.
